A Farewell to The Owl House

[SPOILER FREE] The last episode of The Owl House was released last April 8, 2023, and this article is dedicated as a means of sending my appreciation to the show, especially, how much it means to me.  The Owl House first aired on January 10, 2020, which was just a couple of months away from the infamous March 2020. At that time, I was in my freshman year in college, adjusting and familiarizing a new environment–a new realm. Like Luz, I also felt like I was out of place since I didn’t really know what to do yet at that time, which is–I know, weird for a then 18-year-old freshman, but it was the truth. I passed college applications and took entrance exams just because that was what needed to be done. The course I took, I chose just because I wanted to get away from numbers as much as I could and because of an old childhood dream. At 18, there wasn’t a golden path that I wanted to take, but every decision I made, I made because I needed to.  The inevitable March came and I hate to admit i

Here are some WLW shows that’ll give you those butterflies.

Skam France Season 6

“Skam France is a French-Belgian teen drama television series broadcast by France.tv Slash that follows the lives of teenagers in Paris.”-Wikipedia.

Skam France Season 6 however, follows the life of Lola Lecomte, who is experiencing self-destructive behaviour, worsened by her family’s financial status, and addiction, might be a little too angsty for some, but we all know that after angst comes sweet sweet victory on romantic shows, and this gives you just that. Also there’s teen push and pull dynamics and jealousy. Just what your 15 year old self craved for.

It’s from France, so expect steamy scenes.

Released date: Aired from 24 April to 26 June 2020

Number of Episodes: 10 (16 - 30 mins)

Where to watch: Daily motion and YouTube

Arcane

I said by a buff and rad, red haired woman, to a blue haired uptight enforcer.

“The story follows the origins of two iconic League champions-and the power that will tear them apart. Like the game on which it is based, Arcane is aimed at a "16+" audience and will deal with some more adult subject matter” - League of Legends fandom

To all gamers, animation geeks, who happen to be a woman who likes women, this might suit your taste.

From enemies to lover’s trope, Bad ass jerk fighting women, and although this was based on a game, guess what? No male gaze! That’s right, animation and character designs are amazing and not off like some video games stills would design a woman who can fight.

Although I personally started watching this because Hailee Steinfeld was the voice actor for the protagonist. I admit, I was extremely hooked by the plot and felt like the characters that I was shipping were just a bonus. The visuals were superb, every second worth making a wallpaper.

Not that centered with the wlw, but it is implied(like a lot) and safe to say, Queerbaiting proof.

Released date: November 6, 2021

Number of Seasons: 1 (Season 2 in the making)

Number of Episodes: 9 (39 - 44 mins)

Atypical

“Atypical is an American comedy-drama streaming television series created by Robia Raschid for Netflix. It focuses on the life of 18-year-old Sam Gardner (Kiel Gilchrist), who is on the autism spectrum.” - Wikipedia

This might take you a little ride of episodes towards the wlw couple, but I can assure you that it is worth it. It dwells over teenage self-discovery, coming-out, exploration of sexuality and self-acceptance. This show is like one of the light-hearted show to watch in the morning whilst preparing your coffee, it’s fun and cheesy, a little too relatable and also! It stars Brigette Lundy-Paine and Fivel Stewart, so what more can I tell you?!

Released date: August 11, 2017 - July 9, 2021

Number of Seasons: 4 (End)

Number of Episodes: 8-10 (26 - 38 mins)

Where to watch: Netflix

The Wilds

“Teenage girls from radically different backgrounds find themselves stranded on a remote island, unaware they've just become the subjects of an elaborate social experiment.”- Google

Women? Stranded on an island? What a dream. Tension, tension, tension.

A more modern and older “Lord of the flies” spin off, but rather than a bunch of snotty rich boys, we have diverse women in their teens. (oh and this one’s not an accident too, more of an experiment)

Staying true to what I advertised, The Wilds won’t make you bored waiting for the wlw, because the plot is exciting and actually makes you curious of the events to unfold. When I say diverse, I really mean it. It features native American, middle eastern, African-American characters.

The plot goes over many contexts too (Trigger Warning) like homophobia, Christianity, sexual abuse to minor, death, drowning, and a lot.

At times where death is imminent, you’re in an unknown space, and a budding romance unfolds, you know this show is worth the watch.

Released date: December 11, 2020

Number of Seasons:1 (Season 2 soon)

Number of Episodes: 10 (42 - 61 mins)

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Dickinson

“It takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of a budding writer who doesn't fit in to her own time through her imaginative point of view. Dickinson is Emily's coming-of-age story – one woman's fight to get her voice heard." - Wikipedia.

This show is oozing with sapphic-ness.

Poetry? feminism? quirky Hailee Steinfeld? It got it all.

Like what John Mulaney said "Emily Dickinson is a Lesbian"

well, this just proves that. Though this show is not entirely historically accurate since the creators tend to mix post-modernism attributes in it for comedic effect. You would be surprised by how intricate the research team had done for this series. It greatly showed the real love Emily had for her best friend turn sister-in-law turn lover and vice-versa, that the patriarchy then, tried to erase.

It’s so not familiar with the term “Queerbait” as just in the first 2 episodes, butterflies will travel towards your tummy.

The cinematography, the plot, the writing, the comedy, and the women!! are just impossible to not fall in love with. This is my favorite of all and would gladly recommend you to watch this.

ALSO! It has Wiz Khalifa as Death! How rad is that?!

Released date: November 1, 2019

Number of Seasons: 3 (on going)

Number of Episodes: 10 (35-40 mins)

Where to watch: Apple TV
